H&M’s activewear concept, Move, reveals a set of new fabrics called SculptMove and SoftMove. I wore them through a week of reformer, restorative yoga, weights and chasing my toddler around the park.

I’ve worn a lot of activewear that promises to carry you from studio to street and I’m often left feeling disappointed. H&M’s Move range has earned its way into daily rotation, and did so across four very different mornings: a 6am reformer class, a yoga flow, a weights sessions at the gym and the hardest workout of the lot, keeping up with my 18-month-old at the park.

The concept is built around three fabrics, and once you know them the range makes sense. SculptMove is their firm, sculpting fabric, SoftMove is their soft range and DryMove is the moisture-wicking layer that runs through almost everything and keeps you dry.

The SculptMove High Waist Leggings are my new favourite – I have hardly taken them off. The waistband sits high and wide and – all mums rejoice –stays there. On the Pilates reformer, where you spend half the class upside down, nothing was exposed, no fabric rolled or slid down. The material is firm without cutting in and the high rise genuinely flatters, which after two babies is something I am always looking for.

For yoga, I reached for the Flared Yoga Leggings with SoftMove. SoftMove is the standout of the three fabrics, closer to a brushed jersey than the usual slick activewear feel, with a wide waist panel that does not dig when you are lying on your back in savasana for 20 minutes. They run warm rather than cool to the touch, so I saved them for the studio rather than a hot day outside. The slight flare feels stylish and I’m complimented on these pants every time I wear them.

I wore the SculptMove Medium Support Sports Bra and Activewear Jacket to the gym. For weights, the bra held everything where it should, and the strappy racer back gives it a touch of fun. Medium support means I could not run a half-marathon in it, but for lifting, reformer and
everyday wear, it is plenty.

The SculptMove Activewear Jacket is a slim zip-up with thumbholes and zipped pockets, warm enough for a cold winter morning yet light enough to knot around your waist once you have heated up after too many squats.

The real hit is the Activewear Tee with DryMove, which I wore for the least glamorous session of the week – chasing my toddler, crouching in the sandpit and sliding down the slide 35 times. It breathed, it moved with me and it did not cling once the day warmed up. Soft, light and the kind of basic you end up living in. Owning any kind of tee when you’re a mum is a risk which is why I chose black – less stains, more wear.

What I love the most about the range is the way it feels on my body, the way the fabric breathes and moves with me. The sizing runs snug, so size up if you like baggy active ware, and pricewise the entire range is great value. I keep reaching for the same few pieces, which is the only test that really counts. If you live in activewear the way I do, moving between a studio, a desk and a playground in the same day, this is a smart and affordable place to build a wardrobe from.
