WellBeing Magazine

Byron Yoga Centre has been named the winner of the Yoga & Pilates Services category at the prestigious 2025 Australian Small Business Champion Awards. This national program recognises and rewards the achievements of outstanding small businesses across Australia.

The award was accepted by Cassie Leturgie, Marketing Manager of Byron Yoga Centre, on behalf of Founder John Ogilvie and the entire team.

“John’s story is truly inspiring. During a difficult time in his life, yoga became his lifeline. That experience ignited his mission to share yoga with the world, leading to the birth of Byron Yoga Centre in 1988,” said Cassie. “What started as a small studio has grown into one of Australia’s longest-running yoga centres, offering affordable retreats, teacher training, and accommodation.”

Byron Yoga Centre is more than just a place to practice yoga. Every day, people arrive seeking balance, healing, or deeper connection, and they leave with a renewed sense of purpose and joy. “This award is a testament to the dedication of our incredible teachers, staff, and the thousands of guests and students who have walked through our doors,” Cassie added.

About the Awards

Now in its 27th year, the Australian Small Business Champion Awards celebrate excellence across retail, hospitality, services, and manufacturing industries. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, supporting communities, enriching culture, and bringing people together.

This year’s competition saw over 5,500 entries, with 1,423 finalists across 106 categories. The rigorous judging process recognised businesses that exemplify commitment, leadership, creativity, and social responsibility. The winners were announced at a spectacular National Gala Presentation at The Star Sydney on March 29, 2025, attended by over 1,000 business leaders.

Steve Loe, Founder of the Australian Small Business Champion Awards, praised this year’s winners:
“Running a small business today demands resilience, innovation, and an unwavering spirit. Byron Yoga Centre exemplifies these qualities, making them a deserving winner in the Yoga & Pilates Services category.”

The evening, hosted by Nine journalist Jayne Azzopardi, featured star-studded entertainment, celebrating the success and resilience of Australia’s small business community.

A Year of Recognition for Byron Yoga Centre

Founder John Ogilvie expressed his gratitude:
“Being recognised as a finalist and winning this award is a reflection of our team’s passion and dedication. Exploring ingestive therapies and their benefits

May 14th 2025

WellBeing Magazine

Discover how naturopathy, nutrition & herbal medicine support wellness through natural, tailored ingestive therapies guided by experts.

People are seeking holistic approaches more and more as they look to take preventative measures to support their overall health and wellbeing. This is seeing an increase of people utilising natural medicine and trying different therapies to address their general health or specific areas of concern.

Among those growing in popularity are ingestive therapies such Naturopathy, Nutrition, and Western Herbal Medicine, each offering unique insights and benefits to support the body’s natural healing process.

Naturopathy: a natural path to wellness

Naturopathy is focused on prevention, self-healing and the use of natural remedies to provide the body with the tools and environment to heal itself.

When seeing a Naturopath you may explore dietary changes, be introduced to herbal remedies, and nutritional supplementation, depending on what your area/s of focus are. You will be evaluated as a whole, with the Naturopath asking a series of questions about your health and history to get a better understanding of you and how your body works.

From these questions, the Naturopath will formulate a personalised plan to promote long-term wellness.

Nutrition: Food as medicine

Nutrition is a powerful tool in preventing and managing chronic conditions and supporting general health and wellness.

A Nutritionist will help you understand how food interacts with our bodies, assess your nutritional status, identify imbalances, and recommend tailored dietary plans to meet your needs and lifestyle.

You may also be recommended to take supplements to provide an additional boost to your body. It’s important to not introduce any supplements without consulting with an accredited practitioner.

Western Herbal Medicine: The wisdom of plants

Drawing on traditional knowledge and modern science, Western Herbal Medicine practitioners formulate remedies using leaves, roots, flowers and bark with specific therapeutic properties.

These remedies are commonly turned into teas, tinctures, capsules or powders for you to consume and get the healing benefits from the inside out. Western Herbal Medicine can be used to support a range of conditions and health concerns.

Before introducing herbal medicine, seek advice from an accredited herbalist to receive a tailored plan ensuring there are no interactions with existing medications.

Always consult an accredited practitioner

With the abundance of health information available, it is vital before making any changes to your diet or introducing new supplements/herbal remedies that you consult an accredited practitioner. You will need to answer a series of questions and supply them with any medication you are taking.

This will ensure you can have a tailor-made safe health plan to support your body where needed. Ingestive therapies are natural, however they can still have powerful effects on the body.

ccredited practitioners are trained to provide evidence-informed, individualised care and are committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and ethics in practice. If you would like to find an accredited practitioner near you, visit: https://www.atms.com.au/find-a-practitioner/

Natural ingestive therapies offer an empowering way to support your health, but they should always be approached with knowledge and care. Whether you’re considering herbal medicine, improving your diet, or exploring naturopathy, a qualified practitioner can help you navigate the journey safely and effectively.

Lakanto the natural sugar alternative

May 14th 2025

WellBeing Magazine

We spoke to Leon McIndoe, Director of Lakanto, to uncover the story behind the brand and what makes it a go-to for health-conscious Australians.

How did your journey into natural sweeteners begin?

The Lakanto story began in 1995 when Saraya, a Japanese company traditionally focused on hygiene and sanitation, introduced monk fruit (luo han guo) to the global stage. Saraya, recognising the importance of nutrition alongside hygiene, sought to create a healthy, natural sweetener. We are the first natural, zero-calorie sugar alternative in Japan. It contains no artificial ingredients, measures like sugar, can be used in hot cooking, and has zero calories.

Saraya manages the entire production process, from working with partner farmers in Guilin, China, who grow pesticide-free monk fruit under their direction, resulting in a consistent high-quality product. Our products are packed in Australia and distributed to our customers from our own warehouse in Sydney.

For someone new to Lakanto, which product would you recommend they try first—and why?

Our Classic White Monkfruit Sweetener is an ideal white sugar replacement. It can be used teaspoon for teaspoon and cup for cup to substitute white sugar in any recipe. Lakanto cooks, bakes, and tastes just like sugar but has 93% fewer calories and a low glycemic index, making it suitable for diabetics, those following low-carb or keto diets, and anyone looking to make healthier lifestyle choices. Lakanto offers a replacement for whichever “sugar” ingredient your favourite recipe calls for.

Can you share a milestone that’s been especially meaningful?

Achieving FODMAP Friendly Certification for our range of natural sweeteners. We are the only sweetener range in the Australian market with this certification, indicating that our products have been tested to have appropriate levels of all FODMAPs, scientifically proven to help manage IBS symptoms.

Where can our readers find Lakanto products?

Lakanto is available at Woolworths, Coles and selected independent supermarkets and health food stores. Our full range can also be shopped online at www.lakanto.com.au

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your offerings?

Lakanto offers not only natural sweeteners but also no added sugar syrups, baking mixes and sauces. All products focus on quality, natural ingredients that fit into a variety of diets, including low carb, keto, vegan, gluten-free, and diabetic-friendly. Lakanto is also used in other successful low sugar and keto products from brands like Real Chai and No Grainer.
