There is an intimacy to the act of getting ready that rarely invites scrutiny. Skincare pressed into the skin, foundation diffused across the complexion, fragrance settling into pulse points … small, habitual gestures that shape how we move through the world.
Yet these rituals, repeated daily, form one of the most consistent patterns of chemical exposure in modern life. The average woman uses between 12 and 16 personal care products each day, amounting to exposure to well over 150 individual ingredients. Many of these compounds serve functional roles — preserving formulations, stabilising textures, enhancing sensory experience — and are considered safe within regulated limits. Still, a growing body of research is beginning to examine what happens when exposure is not singular, but continuous, layered across products, absorbed in small amounts and repeated over years.
What begins as routine, over time, becomes a pattern, and it is within that pattern that a more nuanced understanding begins to take shape.
When formulation meets physiology
The skin exists in a constant state of negotiation, both protective and permeable, a barrier that also allows exchange between the body and the external world. Its function is selective, yet far from inert.
Scientific literature has shown that a range of compounds used across skincare, cosmetics and fragrance — particularly those that are lipophilic and low in molecular weight — are capable of penetrating the skin barrier and entering systemic circulation. Biomonitoring studies have detected traces of common cosmetic ingredients, including parabens and phthalates, in blood and urine following regular use.
Individually, these exposures are typically low and within established safety thresholds. Yet this does not render them biologically neutral. Hormones themselves operate at extremely low concentrations, which is precisely why even subtle external signals can have measurable effects. The question, then, is not simply whether a single ingredient is safe, but how it behaves over time — how often it is applied, how it interacts with other compounds and how it accumulates within the cadence of daily use.
Modern beauty routines are inherently cumulative. Each product contributes a small, often overlooked signal, one that in isolation appears negligible, yet over time becomes part of a continuous physiological dialogue. The scientific lens is therefore widening, moving beyond isolated ingredients to consider the architecture of exposure itself.
The ingredients worth understanding

Parabens

Phthalates
Commonly used to stabilise fragrance and improve flexibility in formulations. Often not disclosed individually, instead listed under “fragrance” or “parfum”, contributing to the opacity of this category.
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Used to extend shelf life in products such as nail treatments and hair products, these compounds release small amounts of formaldehyde over time, a recognised irritant.
Synthetic fragrance compounds
A single fragrance listing may represent a complex blend of multiple chemicals, many of which are not required to be disclosed.
Sulphate-based surfactants (e.g. SLS, SLES)
Common in cleansers and shampoos, valued for their foaming properties but potentially disruptive to the skin barrier with repeated use.
PEG compounds and petrochemical derivatives
Used as stabilisers and penetration enhancers, with ongoing discussion centred around potential impurities introduced during manufacturing.
Ethanolamines (DEA, MEA, TEA)
Emulsifying agents studied for their potential to form secondary compounds under certain conditions.
Heavy-metal contaminants

Parabens and some fragrance-associated compounds, for example, have been described as xenoestrogens, capable of binding to oestrogen receptors and influencing hormonal activity. Why regulation hasn’t kept pace
Despite the scale of the global beauty industry, the regulatory framework surrounding cosmetic ingredients remains comparatively permissive. Most products are assessed at the level of individual ingredients and their permitted concentrations, rather than in the context of cumulative, real-world use.
In practice, exposure is rarely singular. It is layered, repeated and continuous, spanning skincare, makeup, fragrance and beyond. Regulatory standards also differ significantly across regions, with the European Union, for example, restricting a far broader number of ingredients than many other markets. What remains less clearly defined is not the safety of a single formulation, but the long-term implications of many used together.
Greenwashing and the language of reassurance
As awareness deepens, so too does the language designed to meet it. Terms such as natural, clean and non-toxic suggest clarity, yet often soften it.
Unlike certified organic, which is governed by defined standards, the term “natural” exists without a universal definition. A formulation may contain a small percentage of plant-derived ingredients and still be positioned as natural, creating a perception of purity that does not always reflect the full composition. As Mitsios notes, products described as natural or organic can still contain a complex interplay of synthetic elements introduced during processing or preservation.
At the same time, it is important to recognise that natural is not inherently synonymous with superior. Not all naturally derived ingredients are suited to every skin type, just as not all synthetic ingredients are inherently problematic. The distinction lies not in the label itself, but in the integrity of the formulation beneath it.

The top of a formulation reveals its base, while the final lines often house preservatives and fragrance systems. Over time, this becomes instinctive, a quiet fluency that reshapes how products are chosen.
From there, transition unfolds gradually. Products are reconsidered as they reach their natural end, beginning with those that remain in closest dialogue with the skin. A more edited routine reduces cumulative exposure while supporting the skin’s own equilibrium. The aim is not to arrive at a fixed definition of “clean”, but to move towards a version of beauty that feels both considered and coherent.
A simpler way to transition your products
- Begin with switching your leave-on products — moisturisers, serums, foundation
- Replace gradually as products reach their natural end
- Reduce excessive layering — fewer products, less cumulative exposure
- Favour transparency — brands that clearly explain formulations
Where science and nature converge
Perhaps the most persistent misconception is that choosing more considered formulations requires compromise, that efficacy must be traded for purity. The reality is far more evolved.
Advances in cosmetic science have ushered in a new era of formulation, where naturally derived ingredients and biotechnology coexist with remarkable precision. Botanical actives are now standardised, clinically studied and refined to deliver measurable outcomes, from antioxidant protection to collagen support and barrier repair. In some cases, plant-derived compounds demonstrate a high degree of bioavailability, their structure closely mirroring those already recognised by the body, allowing for efficient absorption and interaction within the skin.
At the same time, ingredient innovation has moved beyond traditional synthetics, with next-generation alternatives designed to perform the same functional roles while aligning with a more considered approach to long-term exposure and conscious beauty. The result is not a dilution of performance, but a redefinition of it, where formulations are both sophisticated and intentional, delivering visible results while reflecting a deeper understanding of how ingredients behave, not only on the surface, but within it.
Beauty has always been a dialogue between surface and self. To look more closely is not to disrupt the ritual, but to deepen it … moving from habit into awareness, from instinct into intention. And perhaps, in that shift, beauty becomes something else entirely. Not just what is applied, but an even more intimate act of self-care.
